Another World

Tommy Ng's 2025 Hong Kong animation is set in the region between death and rebirth. Gudo guides souls through it, and while conducting a young girl named Yuri he realises he does not understand human feeling. That failure of understanding is the subject. Gudo does his work by the rules, but what Yuri left behind gives him pause; the narrative shows death not as frightening but as unfinished business. The animation is hand-drawn and the design unusual for Hong Kong cinema, building the in-between world from empty squares and long corridors. The tone is melancholy and the pace low. Who it's for: those who like hand-drawn animation and narratives about death. Who it's not for: viewers expecting action; the film is quiet and rests on conversation.
