What Arise, My Love Is About
Spain, 1939. Augusta Nash, a reporter, saves the pilot Tom Martin from a firing squad by claiming to be his wife. From there the two of them move around Europe through the months in which the war begins. It starts as romantic comedy and walks into the rise of fascism. Charles Brackett and Billy Wilder wrote the screenplay and Mitchell Leisen directed, with Claudette Colbert and Ray Milland in the leads. It won the Oscar for best original story. Given that it was made in 1940, while the United States was still out of the war, the political position it takes is still striking.
