What The Mating Season Is About

Ellen McNulty runs a small hamburger stand in New Jersey. One day she sets off unannounced to surprise her son and his new wife. But when she arrives, her daughter-in-law takes her for the maid they have hired for a big party they are giving. Ellen keeps quiet so as not to embarrass anybody and plays the part. Things get tangled from there. Mitchell Leisen's comedy handles the class divide gently but plainly: what is really funny is not Ellen but the circle around her, who find it natural to take her for a servant. Thelma Ritter plays Ellen and was nominated for an Oscar for the part. Gene Tierney is the wife, John Lund the son. Miriam Hopkins is also in the cast.
