What Arizona Is About

Phoebe Titus does business on her own in the Tucson of the 1860s; she wants to build a freighting company and is not afraid of anyone. She meets Peter Muncie, who is heading for California, and falls for him, but Peter carries on his way. Phoebe is left behind and has two men working to ruin her company to deal with. It does not look as though Peter will stay gone. Wesley Ruggles's western, unlike most of its period, puts a woman at the centre: Phoebe, played by Jean Arthur, both drives the story and runs the business. William Holden plays opposite her before he became a star. A large set for the period was built near Tucson, and that ground was later used for other films.
