What True Confession Is About
A writer takes a job as a secretary because her scrupulous lawyer husband is not bringing in money. When her new employer is murdered she cannot settle the question of whether she did it, and goes all the way to trial as a woman who simply cannot stop lying. Wesley Ruggles's 1937 screwball comedy takes lying as a character trait and makes it the engine of the whole thing. Carole Lombard leads with Fred MacMurray as the husband and John Barrymore in an odd supporting turn. The same director and the same pair had already worked together on No Man of Her Own.
