What Too Many Husbands Is About
Bill Cardew, missing for a long time, turns up to find his wife Vicky remarried and in no rush at all to settle on one husband. Wesley Ruggles's 1940 screwball comedy leans its entire tension on a woman postponing the decision, and Jean Arthur's timing is the best thing in it. Fred MacMurray and Melvyn Douglas play the husbands, each as helpless as the other. Set beside the film Ruggles made eight years earlier, No Man of Her Own, the difference is plain: the moral weight has moved entirely onto the woman, and the picture is untroubled by that.
