I'm No Angel

I'm No Angel, directed by Wesley Ruggles from a screenplay and story written by Mae West herself, is a romantic comedy marking the second and final pairing of West and Cary Grant. The film follows Tira (West), a circus stripper who flirts her way into New York high society through a string of wealthy men. The film was the highest grossing movie of 1933; it broke the opening record at Broadway's Paramount Theatre, drawing about 180,000 viewers in its first seven days. Who it's for: anyone curious about a 1930s romantic comedy, written by its own star, that became the year's highest grossing film and marked her second and final pairing with Cary Grant. Who it's not for: viewers used to the more restrained content of films made after the Hays Code was fully enforced, since this was made a year before that, with correspondingly bold humor for its time.
