What Arn: The Knight Templar Is About
Raised in a monastery in twelfth century Sweden, Arn is sent to the Holy Land as a Templar over a sin the church counts as committed, while the woman he loves is shut in a convent. The film runs the two lines in parallel: his campaigns in Palestine and her confinement in Sweden. Peter Flinth mounted it as one of the most expensive Nordic productions of its moment, and the money shows in the battles. The source is Jan Guillou's widely read novel trilogy. What is interesting is that it declines to draw Saladin as the enemy. The narrative occasionally lapses into summarising the book and accelerates there, which leaves the characters on the surface. Who it is for: viewers who like historical epics and the crusading period. Who it is not for: anyone wanting depth of character, since the film is trying to fit too much in.
