What Arsenault and Fils Is About
The Arsenault family have lived off illegal hunting for generations in the Témiscouata region of Quebec, and their word carries there. Anthony, the youngest of the family, comes back after a long absence. Around the same time Émilie, a radio host, arrives in the town and comes to hold sway over both Anthony and his older brother Adam. The balance inside the family starts to give way. Rafaël Ouellet's Quebec film tells family crime less as material for suspense than as a way of life: who does what is known, nobody is surprised, everybody takes their share. Guillaume Cyr and Karine Vanasse are in the cast. The land and the season are part of the telling; the forest itself is the stage. The tone is heavy and quiet.
