What Ask a Policeman Is About

The village of Turnbottom Round prides itself on years without a single crime, the real reason being that Sergeant Dudfoot and his two constables would not recognise one if they saw it. With their jobs about to go, the three set about manufacturing a crime wave of their own, and in the middle of their own fiction they run into a real smuggling ring and a headless horseman. Marcel Varnel directed, and it counts among the best loved of the films Will Hay made with Moore Marriott and Graham Moffatt. The writing credits include Sidney Gilliat and Val Guest, both of whom would go on to direct their own pictures. The title comes from the music hall song "Ask a P’liceman". A Gainsborough production from 1939.
