What Convict 99 Is About
Benjamin Twist is a schoolmaster who has lost his good name. Through a mix up he is taken for a tough prison governor. So he is put in charge of a jail holding hardened criminals. Twist, thinking he has been sent to a school, celebrates accordingly. At the end of the celebration he finds himself on the wrong side of the bars. Then the misunderstanding is cleared up and the governorship is given back to him. This time he sets about making himself popular with the convicts by turning a blind eye to their dealings. The film builds all this as a thorough English comedy of the thirties. Will Hay takes the lead in Marcel Varnel’s British film of 1938, ninety one minutes long.
