Oh, Mr. Porter!

An incompetent railwayman is handed the stationmaster's job at a forgotten halt in Northern Ireland, thanks to a relative. His staff consists of a toothless old man and a stout young one who never stops talking. The station is supposed to be haunted, almost no trains come through, and when our man tries to run a service of his own the whole thing ends up involving gunrunners and a runaway locomotive. It is generally taken as Will Hay's best film, and the trio he formed with Moore Marriott and Graham Moffatt became one of the fixed shapes of British comedy. The station was actually shot in Hampshire, on a line that had closed in 1932. The locomotive chase at the end is still among the finest of its kind.
