Autumn Milk

When her mother dies, the childhood of eight year old Anna is over. From that day she has to run the work of a nine person household. The years pass in hardship, and that does not change when Anna marries. Her husband Albert goes into the Second World War as a soldier. Anna works on the farm while pregnant and cares for sick relatives. At the same time she has to bear the pressure of her mother-in-law. Nobody knows whether Albert will come back. The film tells the war not at the front but in the daily work of a woman left behind. The hundred and eleven minutes are spread over many years. Dana Vávrová and Werner Stocker appear in Joseph Vilsmaier’s German film, completed in 1989.
