What Nanga Parbat Is About
In 1970 the brothers Reinhold and Günther Messner reached the summit of Nanga Parbat by the Rupal face, which had never been climbed. Günther died on the descent, on the Diamir side. Reinhold came back alive, losing toes, and said his brother had been killed in an avalanche. Joseph Vilsmaier's film covers that expedition and the bond between the two brothers going back to childhood. Other surviving members of the expedition accused the film of telling one side only and said events did not happen as shown; the dispute has run for years. The film takes Messner's account as its basis, and it is worth watching knowing that.
