What Bad Company Is About
Delphine is a quiet, rule-following schoolgirl. A new friend she meets at school pulls her into her own circle: late hours, people she does not know, nights spent out. Delphine becomes attached to a boy in that circle and goes further and further to win his attention. In the end she finds herself doing things for money. Jean-Pierre Améris does not tell this as a story of a fall. Nobody deceives Delphine; what takes her there is the wish to be loved and how defenceless her age leaves her. The film makes nothing attractive, turns no scene into a spectacle, and draws the girl as neither guilty nor merely a victim. Maud Forget takes the lead, with Lou Doillon as her friend.
