What Marie's Story Is About
Marie Heurtin was born both deaf and blind, and by fourteen she can communicate with nobody, so her family has to leave her at an institution. Sister Marguerite there believes she can learn and works at it for months, most of the time getting nothing back. Eventually a link forms between a knife, a word and a movement of the hand. This is a true story; Marie lived in France at the end of the nineteenth century, in roughly the same years as Helen Keller. Ariana Rivoire, who plays her, is deaf herself, which is why none of it looks like imitation.
