What Ballad of Orin Is About
Orin is a blind travelling musician, and wherever she goes she is looked down on, used and treated with violence. At the same time the modern world is changing everything around her and leaving less and less room for people who live as she does. Masahiro Shinoda's 1977 film shows the Japanese countryside through its harshness rather than its beauty: snow, road and exhaustion sit inside the story. Shima Iwashita plays Orin. The film does not aestheticise what is done to women and to disabled people, but the violence it shows is heavy and worth knowing about in advance.
