What Sharaku Is About
The year is 1791 and the place Edo. The new government has turned hard against art of every kind; erotic work and anything to do with amusement is banned. Kabuki is inside that pressure too. Tonbo works on the kabuki stage, and after an accident he can no longer walk as he did. A travelling company of actors takes him in. An influential publisher notices the man’s honest, bold drawings. Despite persecution and betrayal he sets about bringing him on. The film starts from the question of who the ukiyo-e master Sharaku was; that person made about a hundred and forty prints in under a year and then vanished. Hiroyuki Sanada takes the lead in Masahiro Shinoda’s Japanese film of 1995, which was selected for Cannes.
