Captive's Island

A young man returns years later to the island he was sent to as a child, come to settle accounts with the man who killed his family. The island had been a place of punishment for him, and he was shut away there so that he would not tell what had happened. A young woman he meets there disturbs the reckoning; he is caught between his decision to take revenge and the closeness that forms, while the past settles over the present like a shadow. The screenplay of Masahiro Shinoda’s eighty seven minute Japanese film was written by Shintarō Ishihara from a novel by Taijun Takeda, with music by Tōru Takemitsu. Shima Iwashita and Rentaro Mikuni star. The film uses flashbacks freely and looks at the damage the imperial order left on individual people.
