What Bananas!* Is About
The documentary follows the case the lawyer Juan Dominguez brought against Dole Food on behalf of twelve Nicaraguan banana workers, the claim being that the company went on using a banned pesticide known to cause sterility. The film sets the inside of the courtroom beside what the workers themselves say. Fredrik Gertten’s eighty seven minute production screened at the Los Angeles Film Festival in 2009; after that screening Dole sued the director for defamation, and the festival attached a written note of reservation to the film. The company withdrew the suit in October of the same year. Gertten later made a second documentary about the lawsuit itself.
