What Bikes vs Cars Is About
Fredrik Gertten's documentary treats the surrender of a city's surface to the private car as a crisis, and sets the bicycle against it. It was shot in São Paulo, Bogotá, Los Angeles, Toronto and Copenhagen, and dwells longest on São Paulo and the campaign to get a bike lane onto Avenida Paulista. Its argument is stated plainly: the interests that profit from the car spend billions every year on lobbying and advertising, and city planning is shaped accordingly. Against that it puts activists and urban thinkers who refuse to stop riding even as the number of people killed on the roads climbs. The film does not attempt an even balance and makes no secret of which side it is on.
