Barbarian

Zach Cregger built the script out of Gavin de Becker’s book The Gift of Fear, which urged women to notice “these red flags that men can give off in their day to day interactions that might seem innocuous, but if you ignore them, you do so at your peril.” He wrote one thirty page scene around a double booked rental house, not knowing where it went. It is set in Detroit and shot in Bulgaria. Cregger says the street itself was built: “we shot in Bulgaria, and our hero block is just a field in Bulgaria. We built thirteen facades.” Surfaces visible in the flashback were built separately, in their well kept 1980s state. That section also carries a different aspect ratio and was finished with video noise instead of film grain, so the two eras arrive in different picture languages. A24 and Neon passed; the budget stayed at 4.5 million dollars, 20th Century Studios distributed and the marketing hid the plot on purpose. It took 40.8 million dollars in North America, with strong reviews and a C plus exit grade from CinemaScore. A good fit if you take the mid film handover to a completely different character as structure rather than fault. Not for you if long stretches playing in near darkness, underground, will not hold you.
