What Battle Cries Is About
Emma is four months into her first pregnancy when she is diagnosed with breast cancer. The doctors propose ending the pregnancy so that treatment can begin; she refuses, and with her partner behind her she tries to carry both at once. Solveig Anspach drew the film from her own illness, and the days spent inside the disease sit at the centre of the story rather than behind it. Karin Viard won the Cesar for best actress in 2000 for the performance, with Laurent Lucas as her partner. The French and Belgian co-production screened in the Directors’ Fortnight at Cannes in 1999. The original title is an exhortation, roughly lift up your hearts.
