What Beaumarchais the Scoundrel Is About
Pierre Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais managed to be a watchmaker, a playwright, an arms dealer, a financial speculator and a spy inside a single lifetime, and the film declines to pick just one of them. It moves between the writing of the Figaro plays, his repeated collisions with prison and the courts, and the covert shipping of French weapons to the American revolutionaries. Édouard Molinaro adapted it loosely from an unproduced play by Sacha Guitry, written after Guitry himself had spent sixty days in prison at the Liberation. Fabrice Luchini plays the man.
