Witness in the City

The industrialist Pierre Verdier kills his mistress Jeanne by throwing her from a train and is acquitted. Her husband Ancelin takes justice into his own hands, kills Verdier, and stages it as an accident. But a taxi driver sees him leaving the house. The rest of the film is Ancelin hunting that driver across Paris through the night, while the man's fellow drivers and his girlfriend on the radio dispatch work out what is happening and try to protect him. The whole city turns into a chase. Édouard Molinaro directs, with Lino Ventura as Ancelin, from a novel by Boileau and Narcejac. Eighty-six minutes. The score is played by Barney Wilen, Kenny Clarke and Kenny Dorham, and the jazz keeps the pulse of the night.
