What The Supper Is About
Paris, 6 July 1815. Waterloo is over, Napoleon is on his way into exile, and who will govern is undecided. Talleyrand invites one guest to supper: Fouché. Talleyrand is a diplomat who has served every regime since the revolution; Fouché is a revolutionary turned chief of police, a man with a file on everyone. They detest each other. But at this table it will be settled whether France gets a king or something else. The whole film takes place over that meal. Édouard Molinaro directs the French film; ninety minutes, with Claude Rich as Talleyrand and Claude Brasseur as Fouché. It is adapted from Jean-Claude Brisville's play and stays a two-hander. Nothing happens except talk; the tension comes entirely from who says what, and from what is not said.
