What My Uncle Benjamin Is About
The eighteenth century, under Louis XV. Benjamin Rathery is a country doctor who loves drinking, eating and women, and has no love at all for marriage. He is in love with Manette, the innkeeper's daughter, but she will give him nothing until she has seen a marriage contract. Meanwhile his sister Bettine is working to marry him off to a wealthy girl. Then an arrogant Marquis crosses him and humiliates him in front of everyone. What follows is revenge. Édouard Molinaro directs, with Jacques Brel as Benjamin and Claude Jade as Manette. It is adapted from Claude Tillier's novel of 1843. The comedy is coarse, loud and indecent entirely on purpose.
