What Beauties of the Night Is About
Claude teaches music in a provincial town, is composing an opera nobody will play, and is thoroughly sick of his life. His days are noise, debt and small humiliations; his nights are dreams. In them he is a figure out of some earlier century, admired by everyone, and a different beautiful woman waits for him in each period. René Clair's 1952 film is a joke at the expense of the good old days: every past Claude visits receives him like a king and then turns out to be unliveable too. Gérard Philipe plays it light on its feet, with Martine Carol, Gina Lollobrigida and Magali Vendeuil appearing across the different centuries.
