What The Beauty of the Devil Is About
In France around 1700, Professor Henri Faust retires after fifty years of teaching and cannot bear what age has taken from him. At that moment Mephistopheles arrives in the shape of a handsome young man with an offer: youth, wealth, power, in exchange for a soul. The swap is made, Faust is young again, and he still will not sign the contract. Which leaves Mephistopheles, now walking around in the old professor's body, having to find a way to get the signature. René Clair turns the Faust legend into comedy built on two actors trading bodies: Michel Simon and Gérard Philipe. The premise is simple and it keeps opening out until the last scene; one of the most elegant things postwar French cinema produced.
