What Silence Is Golden Is About
Paris at the turn of the century, in the small studio world where cinema was still being invented. Emile is a director who agrees to take in a friend’s daughter from the provinces, barely notices her at first, and then falls for her. When his young friend Jacques comes back from military service complaining of his bad luck with women, Emile teaches him every technique he knows, and Jacques promptly uses them on the same girl. René Clair made this out of longing for silent cinema and the world of Méliès, but the mood is not the giddiness of the twenties; it is postwar melancholy. Maurice Chevalier plays Emile.
