Becoming Cary Grant

Archie Leach grew up poor in Bristol. His mother vanished from the house when he was nine, and his father told him she had died. Years later he learned that she had been committed to an institution and was still alive. That boy went to America and became Cary Grant, the most charming and apparently most relaxed man in the world. The documentary is about the distance between those two. Grant married five times, none of them worked, and he spent years in supervised LSD therapy trying to understand himself. Mark Kidel directs, building the film on Grant's unpublished memoir, read by Jonathan Pryce. Eighty-five minutes. The home movies Grant shot himself also appear here for the first time.
