Being in the World

The documentary starts from a question in philosophy. The question is how a person exists in the world. The film rests on the thought of Martin Heidegger. The director had studied philosophy at university. Years later he visits his old professor. The professor’s name is Hubert Dreyfus. That meeting became the film’s starting point. The documentary travels around the world. Philosophers who work on Heidegger are interviewed. It is not only academics who appear, though. Craftsmen, musicians, cooks and athletes speak as well. All of them are people who have mastered a practice. The film describes the move from following rules to mastery. It discusses how that bears on making meaning.
