What Being Two Isn't Easy Is About
The film covers the year between Taro’s first birthday and his second, giving it in turn from the child’s side and from his parents’ side. Taro’s thoughts are heard in voiceover; it opens with him recalling his own birth and he describes the people he meets by his own measure. His mother Chiyo and his father Goro, meanwhile, deal with a small flat, a mother-in-law, lack of sleep and getting used to a new life. Kon Ichikawa’s eighty eight minute Japanese film stages no large events; it gives daily domestic life scene by scene. Fujiko Yamamoto and Eiji Funakoshi appear; it was completed in 1962 and is the film Japan submitted for the foreign language film Oscar.
