What Her Brother Is About
Set in 1926, when Japanese tradition still held far more firmly, the film looks into the inner workings of a small family and above all at the relationship between a sister and her brother. Pressed by her ailing and severe stepmother, the young woman is made to give herself over to the needs of her wastrel brother, and the whole weight of the household settles quietly on her. Kon Ichikawa’s ninety eight minute film was adapted from the autobiographical novel by Aya Kōda, who wrote the screenplay with Yōko Mizuki. To catch the drained atmosphere of the Taisho period, the cinematographer Kazuo Miyagawa developed gin-nokoshi, a technique that leaves silver in the print. It received a special distinction at Cannes in 1961, and Keiko Kishi and Kinuyo Tanaka star.
