What Alone Across the Pacific Is About
Kenichi Horie is set on crossing the Pacific to America in a small sailing boat. In doing it he stands against his family and breaks the law as well. He prepares at length, but at sea nothing goes the way he planned. Unforeseen events come one after another and test how set he is. The film does not build the voyage as a story of triumph; it looks at what being alone actually is. It moves back and forth between the days inside the boat and the home he left behind. The account runs as a story of stubbornness rather than of heroism. Yūjirō Ishihara takes the lead, with Masayuki Mori and Kinuyo Tanaka also in the cast. Kon Ichikawa’s ninety seven minute Japanese film was completed in 1963.
