What Betty Fisher and Other Stories Is About
Betty Fisher is a successful novelist and loses her small son in an accident. Her mother, whose mental health has been poor for years, does something unthinkable to ease her daughter's pain: she takes another child and brings him home. The boy is the son of a young waitress barely holding her life together. From that point several lives start coming apart at once. Claude Miller directed the film from a Ruth Rendell novel, and it does not tell the events through one person's eyes; the "other stories" of the title says exactly that. Sandrine Kiberlain plays Betty, Nicole Garcia the mother and Mathilde Seigner the boy's mother. The telling makes nobody a monster; that everyone acts inside their own logic is what makes the film genuinely uncomfortable.
