The Best Way to Walk

The Best Way to Walk (original title La Meilleure Façon de marcher) is director Claude Miller's feature debut, released on March 3, 1976. Filming took place in the summer of 1975 in an old monastery building in Cellule, in the Puy-de-Dôme region. The film follows two young camp counselors in Auvergne in the summer of 1960, as Marc discovers Philippe's hidden homosexual leanings and uses it as a tool for bullying. Nominated in seven categories at the 1977 César Awards, including Best Film and Best Actor for Patrick Dewaere, its only win was Bruno Nuytten's Best Cinematography award; the film drew over 500,000 admissions in France. Who it's for: anyone curious about a director's feature debut, nominated for seven Césars, about bullying built around masculinity and sexual identity at a summer camp. Who it's not for: viewers wanting a light, comforting summer camp story, since the film directly confronts psychological bullying.
