What Beyond a Reasonable Doubt Is About
A newspaper publisher opposed to capital punishment wants to prove how unreliable circumstantial evidence is. He talks his prospective son-in-law Tom into a plan: Tom will plant evidence against himself in the murder of a nightclub dancer, be convicted, and then the two of them will reveal the setup and humiliate the district attorney. The plan works. The problem is that the only proof of it is held by the man who made it. Fritz Lang's last American film; a bare, cold noir that finishes in eighty minutes. The ending is still argued over.
