What Big Bang Love, Juvenile A Is About
In a juvenile detention facility a boy confesses to killing another boy. Two detectives try to work the case, but the film does not proceed like a conventional crime story. The scenes are built like stage sets, with a pyramid and a rocket standing in the background; the timeline breaks, and the real and the imagined are never separated. What is being told is the bond between the two young men. Takashi Miike's eighty-five-minute film is among his most abstract work, with Ryuhei Matsuda and Masanobu Ando in the leads. It comes as a surprise to anyone who knows Miike from his violent pictures: there is violence in it, but the film stands as an experiment in form.
