What Black Wind Is About
A crew laying railway track across the Altar Desert in Sonora contends with heat by day, cold by night, an isolated camp and the sudden dust storms the workers call the black wind. The tension between the engineers and the labourers grows inside that distance and that exhaustion. Servando Gonzalez adapted his 1965 film from Mario Martini's novel El muro y la trocha; Martini's treatment had won Mexico's national screen story prize in 1960, and the whole thing goes back to an actual railway pushed through that desert. It was shot on location between late 1964 and early 1965. When it opened in Mexico City it stayed in the cinema for twenty two weeks.
