What The Fool Killer Is About

After the Civil War, twelve-year-old George Mellish runs away from foster parents who treat him badly and starts walking through the rural South. On the road he meets strange people and hears stories of the axe-carrying killer of folklore, the Fool Killer; then a drifter named Milo appears, and the boy cannot tell whether the man is that legend himself. Servando González directed; it is the only film he made in English, and the door would not have opened without Anthony Perkins joining the project. Morton S. Fine and David Friedkin wrote the screenplay from Helen Eustis’s 1954 novel. It was Edward Albert’s first film. It came out on 28 April 1965, barely got a release, and was re-edited and put out again in 1969.
