What Blade of Fury Is About
At the end of the nineteenth century, after China’s defeat by Japan, those who want to change the country through reform come up against the conservatives at court. The leading reformer calls a martial arts master who had fought the Japanese in Taiwan to Beijing to teach, and the man finds himself in the middle of politics. Sammo Hung directed and staged the fights himself, with Ti Lung, Yang Fan, Cynthia Khan and Zhao Chang-jun in the cast. It came out in 1993, at the densest point of Hong Kong action cinema, and fits a historical defeat inside the shape of a martial arts picture.
