Blue Moon

Linklater's film that takes place in a single night. The year is 1943, the place is Sardi's, the Broadway bar, and Oklahoma! is opening that evening. What matters about Oklahoma! is that its composer, Richard Rodgers, has a new partner in Oscar Hammerstein II, and the show is an enormous hit. So for Rodgers's former partner Lorenz Hart, that night is an ending. Hart sits at the bar, watches the crowd come out of the theatre, drinks and talks. The whole film happens in that bar. Hart is contending at once with his drinking, his height, a sexuality he has to keep hidden and the fact that nobody wants to work with him any more, and he does it by making jokes without stopping. Ethan Hawke plays Hart, Andrew Scott plays Rodgers, Bobby Cannavale is Eddie the barman and Margaret Qualley is Elizabeth, Hart's twenty-year-old protégée. Scott won a Silver Bear in Berlin for Rodgers. The film opened on 24 October 2025. Almost entirely talk, in one location. Exactly right for anyone who loves Linklater's cinema of conversation, and nothing at all happens for anyone who wants incident.
