What Boogie Man: The Lee Atwater Story Is About
The documentary looks at Lee Atwater, for many years an adviser and campaign manager in American politics. In the portrait the film builds, Atwater stands as the man who revived the Republican Party’s southern strategy, appealing to racism against Black Americans in order to increase support among white voters in the South. According to the account he had a part in the making of Karl Rove and George W. Bush and played a key role in the elections of Reagan and George H. W. Bush. The film takes an openly critical position and does not hide it; the judgement is the film’s. People who stood with him and against him both appear in the interviews.
