Born in Gaza

Hernan Zin's 2014 documentary was shot immediately after the assault on Gaza that year. It follows around ten children; some have lost their families, some are injured, some are still living where the rubble is. The documentary does not set out to explain the political background. The telling is entirely in the children's words; they say what happened and the camera records without commentary. That choice makes the film powerful and one-directional at once. Some of the footage covers the immediate aftermath of injury and death. Zin does not censor it; the aim is not to persuade but to leave testimony. Who it's for: those who can watch humanitarian crisis documentaries and value narratives built on children's testimony. Who it's not for: viewers looking for a many-sided account of the conflict; the film looks from a single position and gives no room to the other side's account. Images of death and injury are also explicitly present.
