What Bread and Chocolate Is About
Nino is an Italian who went to Switzerland for work, moving through jobs that sink a little lower each time, from waiting tables to a chicken farm. He does everything he can to fit in, even dyeing his hair blond to pass as a local, and then a football match comes on the television and gives him away. Franco Brusati holds the migrant experience as pitiful and funny at once without settling into either. There is a great deal here that will be familiar to anyone whose family went to Germany in the same years. One of Nino Manfredi's best parts.
