Buddha Mountain

Chengdu. Three young people move into the same house as lodgers: Nan Feng, a girl who sings rock; Ding Bo, a student who has run from home; and Fatso. All three have something with their families and none of them will discuss it. Their landlady, Chang Yueqin, is a retired Peking opera performer who lost her son in an accident and has since locked herself in along with the house. At first they cannot stand each other. Then the four of them go up to a temple wrecked by the earthquake. Li Yu directs the Chinese film; a hundred and five minutes, with Sylvia Chang as Chang and Fan Bingbing as Nan Feng. It was shot in the region after the 2008 Sichuan earthquake, using the ruins not as backdrop but as part of the story.
