In 1996 a Cuban and Malian collaboration was planned in Havana. When the Malian musicians could not get visas the team turned instead to a forgotten generation of son cubano players and assembled a group on the spot. That group, the Buena Vista Social Club, reached the world through Wim Wenders's 1999 documentary. Lucy Walker's 2017 film looks both before and after that story: where the musicians came from, what Cuba's own history did to them, and who the group lost over the following two decades. It follows the five surviving founding members through a last international tour and closes with the farewell concert in Havana. Wenders was among its producers. Much of the rehearsal and archive footage had not been seen before.
