Butterfly in the Sky

Bradford Thomason and Brett Whitcomb's 2024 documentary covers a children's books programme that began airing in the eighties. It introduced children to books and stayed on air for close to thirty years; its theme music is immediately recognisable to a generation. What is interesting is how the programme was built. Rather than teaching the habit of reading directly, the producers chose to provoke curiosity; children introduced the books in each episode, and that choice gave the show its durability. The narrative also enters the funding problems of public broadcasting; the reason the programme ended relates to a shift in education policy. The presenter and producers speak; the tone is nostalgic and the critical passages short. Who it's for: those interested in television history and children's broadcasting. Who it's not for: viewers who do not know the programme; the documentary's emotional effect rests largely on familiarity.
