Brett Whitcomb's 2012 documentary tells the story of GLOW, the first all-female wrestling show on television, which launched in 1986. By 1989 the programme reached more than seven million viewers worldwide, toured the country and made serious money for its producers. The documentary brings the women of that cast together years later. Its most valuable quality is letting the wrestlers describe the period as they are now: some proud, some bitter, most having received no royalties or pension. The tension between the space the show gave women and the way it confined them inside stereotyped ethnic and national characters is discussed openly. The documentary is the source of the story that later reached a wide audience through the series of the same name. Who it's for: viewers interested in wrestling culture, 1980s television and the working conditions of women performers. Who it's not for: anyone wanting critical depth, or who will find the nostalgic tone excessive.
